Accessibility statement
This accessibility statement applies to two sections of Nesta’s Best Start in Life support: https://products.nesta.org.uk/bsil/playbook and https://products.nesta.org.uk/bsil/profiles.
These web pages are run by Nesta. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- You may find it difficult to use a keyboard to open certain dropdown menus, interact with table views, or move past interactive maps on specific pages.
- Some complex images and data visualisations do not have text descriptions, so the information within them may not be available to screen reader users.
- Some parts of the site may not be announced correctly or logically by screen readers due to the way the code is structured.
- Headings, lists, and embedded content (like frames) are not always labelled correctly, which can make the page layout harder to follow.
- Some text may be hard to read due to low contrast against the background, and some information is conveyed using colour alone, which may be missed if you cannot see certain colours.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
In two key instances, it is not possible to tab to all elements within the page. The first being that the user cannot access the information dropdowns, and the second being the dropdowns on some tables that change the table view. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).
When navigating the page using a screen reader, markup has not always been used to aid accessibility. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
The tab order is not logical when tabbing the page with a desktop screen reader (NVDA). This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 2.4.3 (Focus Order).
Code markup has not always been used to aid accessibility. Elements are present that use unsupported ARIA attributes, and ARIA commands are present that do not have an accessible name. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
Some iframes are not appropriately titled. This may cause screen readers to announce content unexpectedly. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks).
Some information is solely communicated by colour. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of Colour).
Semantic markup is not used appropriately for some headings and lists. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
On the Local Needs, Population Data, and Assets pages, the maps can be difficult to get past when using keyboard navigation. This fails WCAG Level A 2.2 success criterion 2.4.3 (Focus Order).
Some copy has insufficient contrast against its background. This fails WCAG Level AA 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast (Minimum)).
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are currently reviewing these findings to determine the technical feasibility of various fixes. We aim to address these issues where possible, prioritising improvements that have the greatest impact on user experience. We will update this statement as our remediation plan progresses.
